Friday is the last day to voice your opinion on whether the EPA -- the Environmental Protection Agency -- should regulate carbon dioxide pollution, the primary cause of the climate crisis. This is a big deal.

The EPA is taking public comment, before making a ruling.

Of course, special interests -- like the oil and coal lobbies -- are working overtime to defeat a positive ruling and have already gotten thousands of comments submitted in opposition.

Most people don't know about this opportunity for public comment, so your voice can make a real difference. And with a new president in the White House, it's likely that someone will actually be listening. Submit your public comment to the EPA here:

    http://www.RepowerAmerica.org/EPA

In April 2007 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Environmental Protection Agency has the authority to regulate
carbon dioxide if it is harming our health and welfare. After more than a year of delay, the EPA is finally now requesting public comments on whether carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping pollutants are endangering our health and our climate.

Join us, and send a message about how crucial it is to reduce harmful
carbon dioxide pollution. That you expect the EPA to use its powers to protect our health and welfare. That we can "Repower America" by using energy sources that don't emit carbon dioxide, and make the switch to 100% clean electricity. And that the solutions to the climate crisis are the same ones needed to address our economic and security challenges.

This is our chance to go on the public record -- all the comments will be posted on the EPA's website. To post your public comment, just go here.

For nearly eight years, the Bush administration has done nothing to address the growing threats we face from global warming. Hurricanes are getting stronger, the North polar icecap is melting, and we've suffered through intense droughts, floods and killer heat waves.

The deadline is November 28th. Let's help end the era of delay.

    Thanks,

    Mercury Free Mascara

Starting Jan 1st, 2008 the state wide law banning mercury in mascaras, eye liners and skin-lightening creams took effect in Minnesota.

This bold move to ban mercury in makeup makes the great state of Minnesota the first state in the nation to ban intentionally added mercury in cosmetics and sets a tougher standard than the federal government for regulating cosmetic ingredients. "Mercury does cause neurological damage to people even in tiny quantities," said Sen. John Marty, the Democrat who sponsored the ban. "Every source of mercury adds to it. We wanted to make sure it wasn't here."

So your first questions are probably. . .

Why isn't mercury already banned in cosmetics? Well, that's a long story but the short version is that the US FDA has banned very, very, very few chemicals in cosmetics. Mercury is not one of them. In fact, Europe, Korea and Japan have banned many chemicals still common in cosmetics in the USA. Click here for more information.

I don't see mercury on my mascara ingredient label. Does that mean it's mercury free? The actual ingredient name containing mercury is called Thimerosal . It is a mercury-containing organic compound used as a preservative and anti-fungal agent since the 1920s. Thimerosal has been banned around the world but NOT in the US (except for Minnesota).

What should I do now? Ladies, the bottom line in my opinion is actually not about the mercury, but rather, it's about the lack of regulation in general in the USA for cosmetic ingredient safety. So what's a girl to do? Most women are not going to become chemists in their spare time to keep up with international cosmetic ingredient regulations to understand if products are safe. Instead, look for companies that are focused on safety and transparency regarding the ingredients they use.

Afterglow Cosmetics is committed to providing effective and safe cosmetics. They are a Compact Signer for the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and ranked as one of the safest cosmetic lines according to the EWG's Cosmetic Database.

5 Simple Tips for Going Green This Summer

Summer is a great time to do something for the planet!

Here's 5 simple things we've done at home lately to go green this summer...

1.) Dry your laundry in the summer sun!

We live in Arizona, in the Sonoran Desert - a perfect place for drying clothes outdoors. By the time I've clothes pinned the last towel on the clothes line, the first one is practically dry already. We're saving on our electric bill this summer and encouraging our pool going guests to do the same. We bought a retractable clothes line at our friendly neighborhood Ace Hardware store and installed it in about five minutes. When we don't want to look at it, we simply unhook one end and it retracts back on it's compact spool.

2.) Feed your watermelon rinds to the worms!

We've just started an organic compost in a plastic storage bin in our garage. According to http://www.epa.gov/compost, the best ingredients for an organic compost are:
    • Animal manure
    • Cardboard rolls
    • Clean paper
    • Coffee grounds and filters
    • Cotton rags
    • Dryer and vacuum cleaner lint
    • Eggshells
    • Fireplace ashes
    • Fruits and vegetables
    • Grass clippings
    • Hair and fur
    • Hay and straw
    • Houseplants
    • Leaves
    • Nut shells
    • Sawdust
    • Shredded newspaper
    • Tea bags
    • Wood chips
    • Wool rags
    • Yard trimmings
That's easy... I searched the house and found a few starter ingredients - junk mail confetti from my paper shredder, sawdust from the shop vac, last week's flower bouquet in the kitchen, some pistachio shells, watermelon rinds, cherry pits and tomato scraps from our last family pool party, lint from the dryer, empty toilet paper rolls, a few handfuls of compost from potted plants in the backyard and some grass clippings from our electric lawn mower. I also ordered some red wriggler worms from http://www.planetnatural.com.

To keep away pests and odors, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency suggests that you DO NOT compost the following:
    • Black walnut tree leaves or twigs
      • Releases substances that might be harmful to plants
    • Coal or charcoal ash
      • Might contain substances harmful to plants
    • Dairy products (e.g., butter, egg yolks, milk, sour cream, yogurt)
      • Create odor problems and attract pests such as rodents and flies
    • Diseased or insect-ridden plants
      • Diseases or insects might survive and be transferred back to other plants
    • Fats, grease, lard, or oils
      • Create odor problems and attract pests such as rodents and flies
    • Meat or fish bones and scraps
      • Create odor problems and attract pests such as rodents and flies
    • Pet wastes (e.g., dog or cat feces, soiled cat litter)
      • Might contain parasites, bacteria, germs, pathogens, and viruses harmful to humans
    • Yard trimmings treated with chemical pesticides
      • Might kill beneficial composting organisms
Not only are we helping to save valuable landfill space and reducing methane gas, we're also making a great organic compost to keep our houseplants and landscaping healthy.

    3.) Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

We're doing our best to buy products that have minimal packaging or at least recyclable packaging and have decided to not use disposable plastic cups and paper plates this summer. We have some fun plastic tumblers that are washable, reusable and safe around the pool in a dozen bright colors so every guest knows which cup is theirs.

    4.) Grill Natural

This summer we're using our propane grill in the backyard. We're saving energy by using propane instead of our electric appliances in the kitchen and keeping our food natural and healthy by avoiding the chemicals and toxins released when burning charcoal briquettes and lighter fluid.

    5.) Support Our National Parks

Going camping this summer? We recently renewed our Annual Parks Pass for $80. It's good at all of our National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands for a year from purchase. We've already used it for park entrance at Grand Canyon National Park ($25 saved), discounted camp site ($9 savings), entrance to Montezuma's Castle National Monument ($10 savings). Visit http://store.usgs.gov/pass/index.html to get yours. It feels great to support our National Parks and we don't have to wait in the long lines with our pass!

Eco Zen Boutique Announces "Greened Opening" of Eco Shopping Site

    For Immediate Release

Eco Zen Boutique Announces “Greened Opening” of Eco Shopping Site

Tempe, Arizona, May 23, 2008 / Eco Zen Boutique, a socially conscious, green fashion boutique announced the opening of a new online store, http://ecozenboutique.com today. The eco-modern shopping site offers eco friendly clothing, organic cosmetics, recycled handbags, eco chic jewelry and green gifts and goodies at competitive prices.

Owner Tandy Stepp focuses on balancing style and sustainability by handpicking each product line according to the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship. All products at ecozenboutique.com are organic, fair trade, recycled, reclaimed or otherwise sustainable providing a simplified shopping experience for a growing segment of fashion- and eco-conscious consumers.

“You don’t have to sacrifice style to make a difference. It takes each of us doing just a little more to make a big change collectively. If you have a choice, why not buy the product that causes the least harm to the environment, to the people who made it and to your own body?” said boutique owner Tandy Stepp. “It’s easy going green if you start small. The next time you need to replace your mascara, mineral foundation, eye shadow or lipstick, try one of our organic, paraben-free, non animal tested products by Afterglow Cosmetics. The flattering color palette is not only beautiful but does not contain harmful ingredients like most off the shelf make-up does today.”

Bamboo, organic cotton, hemp, flax, soy, cashmere, tencel and other natural fibers grown and produced without synthetic chemicals grace the labels of clothing carried at Eco Zen Boutique. Recycled and reclaimed materials are fabulously reincarnated as handbags made of rubber inner tubes or reclaimed industrial felt, earrings made of glass from soda, beer, wine and champagne bottles and shoes made of car and bicycle tires.

Green gift giving is simple at Eco Zen Boutique. “In addition to a growing selection of eco-friendly products, we also have e-gift certificates, a green gift registry and gift wrap printed with soy inks on recycled paper by CrinkleCo. Green gifts are perfect for weddings, showers, birthdays, anniversaries or any occasion for that special person in your life who wants to make the earth a better place,” said Tandy Stepp.

Current eco labels featured at Eco Zen Boutique include: Afterglow Cosmetics, Blue Canoe, CrinkleCo, Ecolution, English Retreads, Everybody Green Bracelets, Josh Jakus, miYim Simply Organic Toys, Of The Earth, Smart Glass Recycled Jewelry, Sublet Clothing and Tees for Change. Price tags on gifts and apparel range from $5 to $250. Shipping is free for domestic orders over $75.

Through our alliance with 1% For The Planet, Eco Zen Boutique contributes 1% of company sales to environmental organizations. “We also contribute to CarbonFund in order to offset our carbon footprint and to support their alternative energy and reforestation projects, “said Tandy Stepp when asked about the “we’re green” statement on the company web site. “We’re proud to offer carbon neutral shipping for every order with no added cost to our customers.”

    We've Been Spotted on Polyvore

Eco Zen Boutique's recycled glass bottle earrings were featured in an Earth Day fashion trend spotting contest on Polyvore.com in April 2008 by more than a dozen different Polyvore members so we decided it was time to join Polyvore ourselves.

    Happy Earth Day 2

Polyvore is a unique, easy-to-use web-based application for mixing and matching products from any online store. Items are pulled together into a visual set of products that can be shared with anyone. Each product within the set is then linked back to the online store where it is available for purchase.

About Our Recycled Glass Bottle Earrings

These fashion friendly earrings are made of
recycled bottle glass which is cut and then fired. They are light-weight and durable, finished with sterling silver accents and ear wire. The approximate size .75 inch diameter. Each piece is a hand-crafted one-of-a-kind and will vary slightly in shape and size.

Price per pair is $48.00 before discounts.

Where to buy your own pair - in our earth friendly store, Eco Zen Boutique of course!

Put together your own outfits on Polyvore using Eco Zen Boutique's eco-friendly product line by clicking here.

Eco Zen Boutique Goes Carbon Neutral

    Happy Earth Day!

Eco Zen Boutique is committed to becoming carbon neutral through a partnership with Carbonfund.org. We are a small business with lofty goals of making a difference in the world by making green choices a part of our standard operating procedure from day one. We live by Carbonfund.org’s motto, “reduce what you can, offset what you can’t.”

Take the Earth Day Challenge and Go Green With Us

Americans produce enough trash every year to fill a line of garbage trucks that would stretch from the Earth half-way to the moon. That’s 4.6 pounds of trash per person, per day. Thankfully, all that waste doesn't have to go to waste. This Earth Day, Carbonfund.org has decided to promote our mission of a clean energy future by supporting our landfill methane projects. Make the commitment to reduce your footprint each and every day by taking small but important steps to fight climate change. Then, go ZeroCarbon for the year with a $99 tax-deductible donation to Carbonfund.org. You'll also receive a compact climate tote bag to help reduce waste consumption.
